Another show of Military Efficacy

By Warrant Officer Class 2 Llewelyn Reynolds
Support and Services Battalion

Resplendent in their red tunic, the Guard of Honour furnished by the First Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (1JR) transformed the Trelawny Town Square into a Parade Ground. The occasion marked the Installation of the Honourable Harold Paul Arnold Muschett, JP as Custos Rotulorum for the Parish of Trelawny on Thursday 18 March 2010 at Water Square, Falmouth.

The Guard of Honour consisting of one hundred and two Other Ranks and four Officers marched on to the parade ground with heads high, shoulders straight and arms swung, level and in line with the shoulders at exactly 2:30 pm to the tune “Mechanize Infantry” and awaited the arrival of the dignitaries.

The sun showed no mercy to the men of 1JR as they stood at ease in the hot afternoon. Undaunted by the heat, the men stood motionless responding only to the command of the Guard Commander Captain Jerome Richardson. The occasional arrival of the dignitaries and the fast synchronized movements of the soldiers drew applause and praise from the audience.

The audience was enthused by the arrival of the Governor-General His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen. His Excellency took the Royal Salute after which he was invited to inspect the Guard of Honour. Accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff Major General Stewart Saunders, His Excellency paced through the ranks while the Jamaica Military Band and 1JR Corps of Drums excited the ears with the tunes of “Lignum Vitae” and “Jamaican Airs”.

With the dignitaries now seated it signaled another phase in the evening’s activity; the military men had graced the evening and have etched another notch in their historical trod.

The climatic conditions causing glare in the spectators’ eyes did not deter them from experiencing the afternoon’s display as the parade RSM Warrant Officer Class 1 Calvin Dryden marched off his men with pride and pomp to the melody “Grandioso”.

The first citizen of Trelawny, The Honourable Harold Muschett, invited guests and onlookers were captivated by brisk drill movements and tuneful music from the Band and Corps of Drums. The Guard of Honour did their unit proud as they drew praise and adoration from the spectators.
