JDF Gives UWI Students a Career Choice

The sound of the Bell 407 aircraft signaled the presence of the Jamaica Defence at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Career Exposition 2010. As the JDF aircraft hovered the UWI Mona Campus and prepared to land, scores of students and onlookers scampered to the JDF display area.   The presence of a JDF helicopter is usually a high point not only for the JDF display but for the UWI Career Expo in general.

The Career Expo theme, “Flexibility and Creativity for Survival in a Global Workplace” was brought out in the JDF exhibition spearheaded by four units: Support and Services Battalion, JDF Air Wing, JDF Coast Guard and 1Engineer Regiment (JDF).   The Units used the opportunity to showcase what the JDF does on a daily basis.

Whilst the JDF Air Wing had its eye catcher, other units, such as the Engineer Regiment, stole some of the attention. Numerous visitors were fascinated by the ‘Field Refrigerator’ made by the engineers from a recycled drum.   They were praised for their ingenuity.

Every year, the JDF’s participation is highly anticipated as it showcases military hardware which attracts secondary and tertiary students.  The UWI Expo is one of the avenues in which the JDF is introduced to youngsters as a preferred career option.
