“STAYING TRUE TO YOUR WORD”
Over the years the Jamaica Defence Force has been assisting students from various schools in Kingston, St Andrew and St Catherine gaining Job Experience.
It was no different last December when Jeffrey Wiggan and four other students from the Jonathan Grant High School in St Catherine came to Up Park Camp to participate in the JDF Job Experience.
Wiggan is the oldest of three children and currently resides in Keystone in St Catherine.
He was the only male in the group of five who were placed at the Pension Office and Hurricane Shelter.
Initially, they were briefed by the officer-in-charge of the department Major Elaine Wray who welcomed them to her department.
In her welcome address, Major Wray asked about what they were doing in school in regards to their Caribbean Examination Counsel subjects.
Wiggan replied that he was going to take ten subjects along with other members of the group.
It was at this time that she challenged him that if he passed all his subjects she would give him one thousand dollars for each subject.
“In Jamaica today, boys are not doing well in school so this is why I gave him the challenge,” she said.
“After leaving her office I decided that I was going to take up the challenge,” Wiggan declared.
“I continued to study hard so it was no surprise when I heard that I was successful in my exams,” he said.
After receiving my results I came back to Up Park Camp to give Major Wray the good news and of course to collect my reward.
Initially when I visited her office she didn’t recognize me and I had to remind her that I was the person she had given the challenge.
To my surprise she went into her bag and took out her check book and wrote me a check for ten thousand.
“I really appreciated the money because it is going to go a far way in buying books to go back to school,” he said.
“I think when you make a promise you should honour it,” said Major Wray.
“I’m so proud of him; it was as if he is my child.
Wiggan is planning to attend St Jago High School to continue his studies in Sixth Form.
In his downtime he enjoys reading, playing games and watching television.
