Swine Influenza (flu) Alert
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by the type A influenza viruses which can then be spread among humans.
Signs and Symptoms. These are similar to other respiratory illnesses and include fever over 100˚ F, chills, cough, sore throats, running nose, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, body aches and fatigue. Complications can result in pneumonia, respiratory failure and death.
Spread. This is mainly from person to person through droplets (coughing or sneezing) or touching objects contaminated by viruses. This virus is viable for two (02) hours outside the body. It is not spread by eating pork.
Prevention. There is no vaccine presently available to counter this new strain of virus. Development of this vaccine is currently underway, but will take three (03) to six (06) months. General measures include:
- Cover nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer often, especially after sneezing or coughing.
- Proper disposal of napkins used to mop-up body fluids.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
- Avoid close contact with sick persons. If you suspect you have Swine Flu, report it immediately to the appropriate health centre or the JDF Medical Company
