Battle Of The Regiments

The Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment remained ‘Second to None” after defeating the First Battalion The Jamaica Regiment by 2 goals to 1 in the exciting finals of the Football League Competition on Friday 03 July 2009.
This year’s competition was well planned and executed with the game taking on a feature which was missing from last year’s Knockout Competition with the Competition being held for over two weeks, the organizers had enough time for the Knockout and League Competition.
The Knockout Competition was held over a one-week period and saw the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment coming out victorious 3-2 -over the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing in an exciting final.
By winning both Competitions the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment have shown that they are the football giants of the Force, taking the lead from 1 Engineer Regiment (JDF) who defeated JDF Air Wing 5-4 in an exciting penalty shoot-out in last year’s match.
The 1JR goalkeeper was shocked when this goal was scored by a member of the 2JR player (# 11).
The Finals were preceded by an entertaining match-up between Officers and
Senior Non-Commission Officers. The youthful Officers won the game 1-0 much to the disappointment of the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers.
Not to be left without recognition was an entertaining game between two female teams, the red team which was made up of players from 1 Engineer Regiment (JDF), Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard and the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing. Along with the yellow team which was made up of players from the Support and Services Battalion and the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve).
The yellow team came out victorious with a 1-0 score over the red team.
Individual awards were given to persons who the selectors found outstanding throughout the Competition.
Ordinary Seaman Dillon Garrick of the Jamaica Defence Coast Guard was deem the Most Outstanding Young Player.
Private G Simms of the First Battalion The Jamaica Regiment was the top goal scorer for the Competition.
The Most Valuable Player award was given to Private Donnell Fairweather of the
Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment.
“The Competition was very competitive and the civilian team played exceptionally well,” said Major Murphy Pryce, Force Football Officer.

Force Inter-Unit Football Knock-Out and Football League.
He went on to say that the selection process for the JDF’s football squad received a set back as there weren’t enough new players to select from to represent the Force.
Mrs Janice Blake, Marketing and Members Relations Officer of the Jamaica Defence Force Credit Union (JDFCU) presented the trophy to the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment winners of the League Competition.
The JDFCU played a great role in the running of the competition as they were the main sponsor for the event.
This Competition is important in that it is used to identify budding footballers and to select players to represent the JDF in local football competitions such as the Kingston and St. Andrew Football League and international games such as the Military World Games in Brazil.
Chairman of the Jamaica Defence Force Sports Board, Colonel Rocky Meade said that the competition was well contested and built espirit de corps, and thanked the sponsors for seeing to a well run event.
The Force Football Competition was held over the period 15 June – 03 July 2009.
