Celebrating Jamaica/JDF at 47

The birth of Jamaica as an autonomous state is outlined by the formation of the Defence Force to primarily safeguard that sovereignty. The JDF is a definite by-product of Independent Jamaica. This longstanding relationship is usually most clear with the commemorative Independence Day Ceremony and Grand Gala, where the JDF is featured prominently with the display of military spectacle.

As the Jamaica Defence Force celebrates with the nation, the Independence Day Ceremony on 06 August 2009 will be furnished by a Guard of Honour, from the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (2JR) under the command of Major Rohan Johnson, accompanied by a Combined Massed Bands and Drums of the JDF and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The JDF’s role in Independence celebrations is far more than meets the eye. It should be noted that every year the JDF provides logistic and medical support for the planned events. The JDF assists in such key areas as VIP escort; flag raising and lowering; and preparing the Uniformed Youth Groups in drill movement for the staging of their March pass. As usual, the JDF performs these tasks with grace and utmost pride
