The Jamaica Defence Force, along with other government agencies, joins the United States military in another exercise to undertake medical and engineering missions in selected communities across the island.

The initiative, ‘Beyond the Horizon’, started on 07 March 2009 when ground was broken with the construction of a new facility at the Portmore Health Centre. Beyond the Horizon will see three other engineering and construction projects being undertaken at the Yallahs Health Clinic, Bull Bay All Age School and Horizon Park Elementary School in St Catherine.

This partnership will also see the staging of eight health fairs across three parishes, St Thomas, St James and St Ann. These health fairs will provide free medical services to the various communities. The first medical clinic was conducted in Morant Bay from 23 – 27 March 2009, which was welcomed by the residents.

Beyond the Horizon exercise is planned under the auspices of the United States Army South and is geared at providing practice and experience, in humanitarian services, for various US military units going into deployments overseas.

The exercise will be completed by June 2009.
