Captain (Naval) Sydney Innis, Inspector General

Captain (N) Sydney Innis has been promoted by the Defence Board from the rank of Commander to Captain (the naval equivalent to the army rank for Colonel) and appointed Inspector General at Headquarters Jamaica Defence Force, with principal responsibility for Inspections, Ceremonials, Legal Matters and Investigations.

Captain (N) Innis has given 27 years of service, most of which was served in the JDF Coast Guard.  His previous and most prominent position was as the Commanding Officer for the JDF Coast Guard.  During his five years in command of the Unit, he managed the acquisition of three new offshore patrol vessels and saw to the refurbishment of the Unit’s inshore patrol vessels.  He was also instrumental in the establishment of several new Coast Guard stations in strategic locations throughout Jamaica’s archipelago.

Captain Innis has served as Aide-de-Camp to two Governors-General and Equerry to Her Majesty The Queen, service for which he was invested as a member of the Royal Victorian Order. He is the recipient of the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service to the JDF. 

He has served on Secondment with the Maritime Authority of Jamaica as a Marine Engineer, during which time he was appointed Jamaica’s Alternate Delegate to the International Maritime Organization.  He has remained a member of Jamaica’s delegation to the International Sea Authority.  

Captain Innis holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Maritime Affairs from the International Ocean Institute, Dalhousie University, Canada, and Masters of Science degrees in Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection, and in Government, from the World Maritime University in Sweden, and the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, respectively.             

He is married to Jacqueline and has a son Andre and a daughter Sasha.
