JDF Coast Guard Makes another Ganja Bust

The JDF Coast Guard continues to thwart the efforts of narcotics traffickers as evidenced by the latest bust.

The JDF Coast Guard deployed to the Portland Bight Area at approximately 2000 hrs on Thursday 24th April 2008 on a routine operational deployment. The crew was conducting an extensive search of the area when they were re-deployed to the Needles Point area of St. Catherine. As the team raced towards the area, the drug traffickers inexpertly attempting to navigate the area ran aground on a reef a half mile southwest of Needles Point. When the Coast Guard vessel arrived on the scene the go-fast was firmly aground but the traffickers were nowhere in sight.

The crew of the vessel secured the area and was relieved by another crew during the night. The following morning a member of the team went aboard the go-fast and did not find anyone onboard but discovered several packages typical of those used to transport marijuana. The crew was able to re-float the go-fast boat and safely remove it from the reef. The go-fast was driven to the Coast Guard Base where it was searched by JDF and JCF personnel.

Ten packages weighing three hundred and eighty two point five (382.5) pounds of what was confirmed to be marijuana was handed over to the Narcotics Division of the JCF. The go-fast vessel is presently being held in the custody of the JDF Coast Guard pending further investigation.
