WARRANT OFFICER CLASS ONE (WO1) Lloyd Smith
Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Lloyd George St Claver Smith was appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of I Engineer Regiment (JDF) (1 Engr Regt) in November 2008 when he was promoted to the rank of WO1 in the same month.
WO1 Smith is a veteran soldier in 1 Engr Regt (JDF) having been in the Regiment when it was called the Construction Squadron, a sub-unit of the Support and Services Battalion, until it became an autonomous unit in 1991 (operational in 1992) and achieved its current name and status.
WO1 Smith has had a very successful career in the Engineer Regiment. He served at various levels between the ranks of Sapper and Sergeant, while it was still the Construction Squadron and by the time it gained the unit status, Smith progressed steadily to the rank of WO2 where he was appointed Squadron Sergeant Major (SSM) for 3 Construction Squadron (3 Const Sqn) on 05 March 1993 and SSM for 4 Support Squadron (4 Sp Sqn) on 07 July 2004.
Lloyd George Smith was born on 03 April 1958 at New Road District in the parish of Westmoreland. He attended the Black River Primary School from 1965 to 1972, and the Black River Junior Secondary School from 1973 to 1976, with passes in four Jamaica Schools’ Certificate (JSC). After completing his secondary education, he later enrolled in the Black River Trade Training Centre where he attained a certificate in plumbing and pipe fitting. This was to set the stage for his thriving career in the JDF.
Lloyd was a very focused young man, having sought qualification as a plumber, he was ready to serve in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). At 20 years old, Lloyd Smith became enlisted in the JDF. Immediately following his recruit training in 1979, he was earmarked for the Construction Squadron and posted there as a Class 3 Plumber.
WO1 SMITH has completed a number of military and professional courses both locally and overseas, including Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Cadre; Instructor Course; Plumbing and Pipe Fitting at the Royal School of Military Engineer, England; Combat Engineer at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, USA; Supervisory Management Training Technique at Management Institute for National Development (MIND), Jamaica; Water Treatment Specialist at United States Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Virginia, USA; and Water Well Drilling Course at the Naval Construction Training Centre, California, USA.
RSM SMITH is a recipient of the Medal of Honour for Long Service and Good Conduct and also the First Bar for the Medal of Honour for Long Service and Good Conduct.
